Using Google Chrome with Lotus Connections May 3, 2009

Google Chrome is a web browser that came out initially in September of last year.  It made a fairly significant impact right out of the gate with some great and innovative features.  Mostly the browser’s innovations are centered around the user interface.  I personally fell in love with it pretty quickly.  It’s a very capable browser and its speed and capabilities help make me very productive.  Check out some information on the browser here:  http://www.google.com/chrome.

One pretty neat thing about Chrome is how easy it was to integrate some features of IBM’s internal Lotus Connections implementation.  Particularly Chrome’s support of search engines.  So here’s a couple of things I’ve done with it.

Searching for Dogear Bookmarks
I tend to live in my Dogear bookmarks at work, but it can be a pain to launch my browser, bring up Dogear and search for what I’m looking for.  So to quickly search my bookmarks to get what I want, I just created a custom search in my Chrome browser.  Chrome has very easy search integration capabilities built in.  I can simply open a new tab and right in the address bar type what I’m searching for and when I hit enter it searches my default search engine.  I can also tell Chrome to search other sites too by using a keyword.  For example in the address bar I can type amazon.com Lotus Connections and hit enter.  Because “amazon.com” is a keyword that triggers Chrome to search Amazon, it immediately presents me with the results from an amazon.com search.

I can do this easily for Dogear too.  To add this functionality I simply right click in the address bar and select “Edit search engines…”.  Click the Add button and fill out the form.  Give it a name, a keyword, and the URL should be something like “http://<dogear host name>/html?email=<your using id>&tag=%s”.  The “%s” plugs in whatever you type into the address bar for your search after the keyword.  In this case I’m doing a tag look up.

Now I can just type “dogear <tag>” and all my bookmarks with that tag show up.

Search for Profiles
Searching for profiles is much the same thing.  Simply right click in the address bar and select “Edit search engines…”.  Click the Add button and fill out the form.  Give it a name, a keyword, and the URL should be “http://<profiles host name>/profiles/html/simpleSearch.do?name=%s”.  The “%s” plugs in whatever you type into the address bar for your search.  In this case I’m doing a name look up.  Now I can just type “profiles <name>” and get the results of the name I’m searching for.

Although Google Chrome is not a supported browser for Lotus Connections at this time, it certainly can be.  Google still has a little work to do on Chrome to reach a level of parity with Firefox to really start to make users switch and that will come soon enough I think.  I’ve shown here it can be a reliable browser now and some great out of the box features to get you working with Lotus Connections.

I got a Kindle April 23, 2009

Ever since Amazon came up with the Kindle, I was hooked.  Their concept and packaging was fantastic.  I finally got one.  It was delivered today and I’m loving it so far.

I love reading and I spend a fair amount of time doing it, particularly when I travel.  There is a lot of waiting these days when travelling and I’m not so keen on working all the time.  So I find other entertainment options.  Like books.

Books are very portable in paperback form.  I will only buy paperback book because I simply hate being weighed down by a big ol’ heavy hard cover book.  That sometimes limits the books I can buy and straight to paperback is rare.

My other problem is I read very fast.   I can speed read and depending on what I’m reading I can cram through a book in a single flight.  When I do that though, I run out of books right in the middle of my travels.  While every airport has a news stand or book store, their selection leaves a lot to be desired.   So I often end up with a book that I sometimes end up not liking and dump it.

Enter the Kindle.  It solves both of my problems.  First, I can get hard cover books now assuming they have a Kindle edition.  Second, Kindle use what is called Whispernet which allows me to basically find and buy many books no matter where I’m at.  Just as long as I have a signal, then I’m in.

So the Kindle has been out for a while but I couldn’t really afford it until now.  I got the Kindle 2 and so far so good.  It’s got a great screen, simple navigation and an entire book store right on it.  I travel next week too, so this will be a good test.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Taking care of tasks April 18, 2009

I see people every day who seem to not have a method to organize their activities.  I can’t understand how you can go through your work day let alone your life without a calendar and task list.  What I don’t understand is how can people remember what to do if they don’t have some kind of organizational method and tools.  I know for sure that I can’t do it.  I have to have a system in place to capture, track and manage all of my activity.  When I don’t, I suffer from lack of focus, I feel lost and I have a sense of feeling utterly unable to accomplish anything.  I simply feel unorganized.

There are a number of examples of people with good and bad organizational methods.  My wife is a good example of a bad organizer.  She isn’t always able to remember things.  I think it’s because she doesn’t write everything down.  Only recently has she started to use a calendar to keep appointments, but even then she doesn’t always remember to put reminders into it.  It kills me.  In her defense, she always remembers the important stuff, it’s the little stuff that she forgets.  For me, forgetting the little things is what destroys my productivity and without an organizational system I am lost.

Keeping yourself organized requires a method.  I’ve seen many and I have used many.  There are those methods we  invent on our own as well as those that we can learn.  “Getting Things Done” http://www.davidco.com is my current method of choice but there are many others including the “Post-It Note” method, “Index Card on the Wall Nail” method, the “Franklin Day Planner” method, “Pen and Paper” method and others.  None of these methods are the best for everyone.  Usually one of them is the best for you.  Also, none of these methods are 100% perfect.  You will have to adjust them no matter what to find a method that works best for you.

Tools are an important part to keeping myself organized.  I frankly don’t think I could get or stay organized without them.  There are numerous tools that can help you.  There are Blackberry Devices, Palm devices, the Microsoft Outlook client, the  Lotus Notes client and the good old standby…pen and paper.  I have personally used all of these and many more.  Frankly, all of them fall short in some way or other.  I’ve learned that no matter what tool or tools you use they will never be perfect.  It’s all about finding the best way to make these tools useful to you and that work with your method.

For me, keeping my activities organized makes me feel secure.  I’m focused and I’m not losing stuff no matter if it’s ideas or pieces of paper or electronic documents.  Everything is organized.  When that happens, I have found that the single most important benefit from getting and staying organized  is an absolute sense of accomplishment each and every day.  When my days are organized, I focus on the tasks that need to get done and at the end of the day I can honestly tell my self that I was successful today.  I’ve never slept better.

News is entertainment March 20, 2009

My wife is a great example of someone that does not pay much attention to news.  Occasionally she catches a piece of news on the television or a news web site, but she certainly does not go looking for it.  I suspect there are a lot of people in the United States like my wife.  I won’t go into why I suspect that, but I’m sure I’m not the only one to have these suspicions.

I’m a news junkie.  I live it and breath it.  I have to have it.  I can understand how a lot of people simply do not enjoy the news.  It’s not entertaining to them nor does it seem to affect their life in any direct way making it not interesting.  I get that.  I’m here to prove however that they are wrong.  News is entertaining.

Here’s the trick.  Don’t actually read the articles.  Simply read the headlines and think a little about what those headlines are saying or not saying.  Here are some examples.

“Rainstorm Soaks Southern California, Residents Flee”.  If you had been watching the news around the time this headline hit the press, you’d know this is funny.  Just a couple of weeks prior, Southern California was suffering through a number of large forest and brush fires, aptly dubbed a “firestorm” and residents were fleeing then too.  Isn’t rain good for that?  Doesn’t it actually solve the “firestorm” problem?  They don’t want to be dry.  They don’t want to be wet either.  I wonder if they are good with just being moist.

“FBI Warns of Possible Terror Plot Against NYC Subway”.  How does a subway offend a terrorist group?  Why is the subway the focus of the attacks?  Sure they are smelly, crowded and you have to suffer a lot of rude people but other than that?

“Cops:  Drunk Driver Runs Over Own Legs After Chase”.  Really?  Do I need to say anything here?  How exactly do you do this?

“Bailout Is Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year”.  Now I’m sure they are referring to the financial bailouts of financial institutions but what about the concept of posting “bail” for criminals?  Bail out all the criminals to make society better.  Right.  I think they should have thought that through a little more.

When I read news, this is how I think.  A little bit off.  But I also think these headline writers are seriously lacking the ability to summarize their articles in one short sentence.  This is entertainment to me.  When you look at it in this manner, it should be to you too.  Enjoy the news!

My name is Jason and I’ve created this blog to mostly entertain myself.  I have content in my head that I feel needs to get out and this is my outlet.

I’m not blogging to entertain you but me.  This is my blog about stuff I find funny, interesting or irritating to me.  It’s my opinion and I don’t have any expectations that anyone else will like it.  If you happened to be entertained or informed by what I write here then I’m pleased.  If you don’t like what I write here, I’m ok with that too.  If you feel the need, go ahead and express your opinion as well.  I welcome it.

I expect to write about a number of subjects here.  I might share interesting or funny facts.  I might share my rants.  I might share my odd view of the world at large.  I will often share information on the work I do with the idea that it might be helpful for others as well.

My work is with IBM.  I’m a consultant in the Lotus Software group.  I work with various technoligies including Lotus Notes and Domino, Quickr, Connections, Sametime and others.  I hope to share information and ideas that may be useful on those subjects.

Welcome to my blog.   For other information on me, check out my About page as well.
